They remind climbers of the 4-step self-verification process you should complete before climbing on any auto belay -- it only takes a few seconds and is an important reminder to always check your safety systems before going vertical.
CONNECT
Start by ensuring your harness is fitted correctly and knowing the proper place to secure the belay. Most harnesses use an easy-to-identify belay loop. Check with the manufacturer or gym staff if you're unsure about your harness's fit and connection point. Connect the auto belay carabiner to your harness.
LOCK
Verify the carabiner completely captures the belay loop, and that the gate is fully closed and locked. Never climb on an auto belay and notify gym staff if the auto-locking gate appears worn or damaged or if it does not function properly.
INSPECT
Inspect your whole system. Double-check that buckles on your harness are correctly threaded and adequately fitted. Confirm the auto belay is properly connected to the harness and the gate is fully closed and locked. Pull several arm lengths of lanyard from the auto belay and release to confirm normal retraction. If retraction seems slow or the lanyard doesn't fully retract, do not climb on the auto belay and notify gym staff.
PROCEED
As you climb, stay on route. Keep the lanyard free of holds and other obstructions on the wall, and never climb into slack. New to auto belays or haven't climbed on one for a while? We recommend climbing 6ft (2m) and letting go of the wall to experience the feeling of a "catch" and lower. Remember, never climb next to or above the auto belay unit and always return the carabiner to the belay gate or other fixed anchor when back on the ground.
